Croatian Historical Museum

The Croatian Historical Museum is located in the old part of the city, in a representative baroque palace of the late 18th century. The luxurious mansion often changed owners until in 1991 it hosted an exhibition on the past of the Balkan republic. Its funds contain over 200 thousand antiquities.

They are grouped into two dozen collections: archaeological monuments, paintings, engravings and sculptures, fine art of the 20th century, religious artifacts, everyday items, etc.

What to see

Archaeological collection includes more than 700 items from 14th to 19th centuries made of glass, ceramics and metal, found on the territory of Croatia, and telling about the everyday life of inhabitants of the Adriatic. The collection of documents contains important evidence of the country’s rich history from the 16th century to the beginning of World War II, including the Vlas Statute of 1630.

A special pride of the museum is the sector of the antique map. There are hundreds of plans showing how the Balkan region has changed over the centuries. The oldest map is Claudius Ptolemy’s “Europe” from the 16th century.

The Croatian Historical Museum has one of the best collections of weapons in Europe. The first firearms muskets and petronels, rapiers and skjavons, Turkish sabers and rifles, bows, collections of jatagans, pistols, military and hunting rifles are kept here.

The painting department is represented by works of foreign artists (Jean Fouquet, Martin van Meytens the Younger, Stefan Dorffmeister the Elder, Johann Daniel Donat) and local artists: Wokosław Karas, Ivan Skwarczyna, Jakov Steger, Josip Franjo Muke, Jakov Szaszel.
